Arizona for Rent: Pallet Buyers Under Scrutiny

As a follow up to my article on Arizona for rent I found this and wanted to link to it.

Beginning this summer, in Arizona, there will be new restrictions on any firm in the business of recycling, shredding, reselling or destroying pallets. If the company buys more than five pallets that have a company logo at one time, the buyers have to get identification from the sellers, including a name and phone number, the seller’s driver’s license or other ID, and the license plate number of the vehicle used to deliver the pallets.

Some business lose as much as $700,000 yearly from the theft of pallets. It seems people who need cash go out at night with a pick-up truck, steal the pallets and recycle them for cash. It is reminiscent of the milk crates people used to steal and use for furniture in apartments.

Rep. Jim Weiers, R-Phoenix, said he did not understand why, if it is illegal to possess those plastic pallets in the first place, recyclers should be allowed to buy them at all.

There is opposition to the law because of the steep penalties which can be up to $30,000 that accompany the theft of pallets according to the folks at https://www.azdailysun.com/business/article_5afb1be6-53b0-5c6d-95da-eb9f7499dd3c.html.
